The Old Testament Poetic Books
Meets five weeks, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Mondays, October 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, at Bovino's Pizzeria, 331 N. Courtland St., East Stroudsburg, for inexpensive dinner followed by class.

Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs are sometimes called the Wisdom Books, or known simply as the Writings (distinct from the Law and the Prophets). While nearly all 39 books of the Old Testament contain at least some poetry, these five are overwhelmingly poetic. Perhaps it is no accident that they seem to resonate most deeply in our souls: Job with its questions about suffering; the Psalms giving voice to every conceivable human emotion; Proverbs with its witty and yet profound nuggets of wisdom; Ecclesiastes with its strikingly postmodern skepticism; and Song of Songs with its incomparable celebration of love. It is impossible to imagine our Bible without these priceless treasures, and it is my conviction that ancient as they are, no books anywhere in the Bible speak with such incisive relevance to the yearnings and dilemmas of our time. Notebooks provided; textbook recommended but not required: An Introduction to the Old Testament Poetic Books, by C. Hassell Bullock, available new or used from Amazon.

You are invited to read the book in preparation for each session or just come to hear some great dog stories and see how God uses them to teach us new tricks. As part of your registration for the class, email Pastor Larry to share a picture of your best friend, making sure you include the dog's name...and yours.

Serving from the Heart: Finding Your Gifts and Talents for Service

Meets six weeks, 5:45-7:15 p.m. Wednesdays, September 28, October 5, 12, 19, 26, November 2 at Bovino's Pizzeria, 331 N. Courtland St., East Stroudsburg, PA 18301.
God's plan for the church calls for each member of the Body of Christ to play a vital role. Sometimes we think that serving God is an obligation, a duty, and that it isn't meant to be enjoyable. The truth is, though, that God wants us to find joy and fulfillment when we serve. That happens when we serve in a role that matches who God created us to be. In this study we will take a 6-week journey of self-discovery as we learn more about how the Body of Christ is intended to function, and what that means to each person. This study leads adults through assessing their spiritual gifts, talents and abilities, resources, individual style, dreams and experiences...all adding up to an enhanced capacity to serve God and neighbor.

Short Stories by Jesus: Untaming Jesus' Parables
Meets five weeks, 6:30 - 7:45 p.m. Thursdays, October 6, 13, 27, November 3, 10 (no class Oct. 20), at Starbucks, 745 Main Street, Stroudsburg.
Jesus' parables are inspiring and memorable... but have we made them too tame? Throughout this study, we will seek to understand how Jesus' parables would have sounded to his original listeners, and hear the deep and even surprising challenges that he posed to them - and us. This study will focus on Short Stories by Jesus: The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi by Amy-Jill Levine, a Jewish professor of New Testament studies. (Book is available in hardcover, paperback, and Kindle editions.)
